If you have opened Google Search Console and seen a pile of pages marked "Crawled - currently not indexed", you have probably wondered whether something is broken. Google has rewritten its explanation of that status, and the new wording is meant to calm site owners down.
What changed
Google updated the "Crawled - currently not indexed" section of its Page indexing report help page. Search Engine Roundtable reported the change on November 3, 2026. Google did not announce it, and the help page shows no "last updated" date.
According to Search Engine Roundtable, which quotes an archived copy of the page, the old text said: "The page was crawled by Google but not indexed. It may or may not be indexed in the future; no need to resubmit this URL for crawling."
The new text starts:
Google then adds two steps. If you see the message for important pages, use the URL Inspection tool and other tools to check for issues on your site that stop the pages from appearing, "such as if you've blocked them from our crawlers." And if you have fully diagnosed potential issues and suspect an indexing bug "due to a complete, site-wide problem with indexing," use Google's "report an indexing issue" form.
What it doesn't say
The new wording doesn't mention content quality. Search Engine Roundtable noted this too. Google has talked about quality and this status before.
In the July 16, 2026 episode of Google's Search Off the Record podcast, Martin Splitt asked whether "crawled - currently not indexed" is often or only sometimes a sign of a quality issue. John Mueller answered "Sometimes." He said that if Google's systems "are seriously worried about the quality of a website," they "will reduce the number of pages that they index," and you then see "crawled not indexed" or "discovered not indexed" (episode transcript).
He added that when Google is not indexing a lot of your pages "and there's no technical reason," you need to "take a step back and think about the quality overall." So "common" doesn't always mean "nothing to think about."
Why it matters for small sites and shops
Google now says this is a common message for many sites. On a small site or shop, pages such as tag pages, filtered category pages, near-identical product variants or old posts can end up here. That alone is not a reason to panic or to resubmit every URL. What matters is whether the pages that bring you customers are indexed.
What to do
- List your key pages. Your home page, main service or category pages, best-selling products and top articles.
- Inspect those, not everything. Run each one through the URL Inspection tool in Search Console. It tells you whether that URL is on Google.
- Rule out technical blocks. Check for a noindex tag, a robots.txt rule that blocks the page, a canonical tag that points to another URL, or a login wall. The Page indexing report usually lists these under their own reasons ("URL marked 'noindex'", "URL blocked by robots.txt", "Alternate page with proper canonical tag", 401 and 403 errors), so check those reasons for your key pages too.
- Look at the pattern. If many important pages sit in "Crawled - currently not indexed" with no technical reason, take an honest look at whether they add anything unique compared with similar pages elsewhere.
- Only report a bug if it's site-wide. Google's form is for a complete, site-wide indexing problem, not for a handful of pages.
Check your indexability settings
SEOSFT's Indexability check, part of the free plan, lists pages that robots.txt blocks for Googlebot, pages with a noindex meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header, pages whose canonical tag points to another URL, pages that redirect, and pages that return errors. It does not tell you why Google chose not to index a page.
