If people can create content on your website (comments, reviews, forum posts, profiles or tool-generated pages), Google has just updated guidance that applies to you.
What changed
On October 26, 2026, Google updated its Search Central page Prevent user-generated spam on your site and platform. Google's documentation changelog says the update adds "guidance on blocking indexing of link-shared content and monitoring abuse in Search Console," to help platforms "keep user-created pages that aren't meant for Search out of the index and detect spam earlier."
The main changes:
- More types of sites are named. The page now says that "Hosting platforms and tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps may be similarly open to abuse," like open comment forms. Spammers may use them to create "a large number of pages or sites" that break Google's spam policies.
- A new section: "Only index content meant for Search." If your service lets users create "shareable pages, generated outputs, or interactive tools," Google says to "consider whether that content is meant to be found through search engines or only accessed directly by people with a link." For pages created for direct sharing, collaboration or utility, Google says to apply noindex (with a robots meta tag or the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header) or block crawling in robots.txt by default.
- New monitoring advice. Google recommends verifying your site or subdomain in Search Console so you get email alerts about manual actions and security issues. It also says to check the Page Indexing and Search performance reports regularly for unexpected spikes in indexed pages, impressions or queries that "don't match your platform's purpose." Platforms should also track how many public pages are created and indexed, and set up alerts for spikes, or for a small number of users generating a large share of indexable URLs.
Is this a new penalty?
No. This is a documentation update, not an announced ranking update. The Google Search Status Dashboard lists no ranking update for October 2026. The latest is the September 2026 spam update.
SEO professionals are reading the change as a signal, though. Search Engine Roundtable reported that Lily Ray called it "Another clue from Google about new types of spam they are dealing with," and that Marie Haynes asked whether new manual actions are coming for AI tools and app-building platforms. That is speculation. Google's changelog entry gives only what changed and why, and says nothing about enforcement.
What to do
Most small business sites aren't app platforms, but many have user-generated pages somewhere:
- List every place users can create pages. Comments, reviews, forum threads, member profiles, wishlists, shared carts, quote or calculator results, and AI-generated pages all count.
- Decide which ones belong in Search. A useful, moderated forum thread might. A shared basket link or an auto-generated results page probably doesn't. Add noindex to anything that's only meant for people with the link.
- Mark untrusted links. Google suggests adding rel="nofollow" or rel="ugc" to all links in untrusted content. It also suggests noindex on posts from new users without a reputation, until they earn one.
- Watch Search Console. Look for sudden jumps in indexed pages, impressions or odd queries. Google lists these checks under "Monitor your service for abuse."
- Add basic protection. The guide recommends reCAPTCHA or similar tools on sign-up forms, manual approval for suspicious interactions, and a blocklist (for example, IP addresses) for repeat spammers.
Check which pages Google can index
The SEOSFT Indexability check lists pages with noindex, pages robots.txt blocks for Googlebot, and pages with wrong canonicals or errors.
